FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED TO HIS FORMER FIANCEE WITH A 22 LINE HOLOGRAPH POEM , "Para Concepción Guerrero con la amistad de Jorge Luis Borges". Additionally signed by Borges beneath the photographic frontispiece and he has fully transcribed the poem Arrabal en que pesa el campo, which is printed on pp. 13-14. A very personal copy of this rare early collection of his poetry, the first poem in the collection being one of his most famous evocations of his home city. Concepcion was the young daughter of Spanish immigrants and a friend of Borges sister that he fell deeply in love with, despite his mother's disapproval in the early 1920's. Their affair was to prove tortuous for Borges as it brought to the surface his often conflicted feelinga regarding his mother's influence and her often inflated sense of their family's place in society. Concepcion was the obvious influence of much of his early love poetry, it's melancholy tone no doubt a result of the young writer's unwillingness to go completely against the family in his ardor for his young lover, seen to be beneath Borges' mother's idea of a suitable spouse fo her son. A year-long trip to Europe arranged by his mother did less to disrupt the relationship than Borges falling for one of Concepcion's friends, Norah Lange. The guilt he would feel for betraying his young lover when he at last broke of the engagement was be a lasting one. Such extraordinarily personal association copies appear rarely at auction.
