Description
PHILLIP, Arthur (1738 - 1814). Extracts of Letters. Extracts of Letters from Arthur Phillip, Esq., Governor of New South Wales, to Lord Sydney. [Bound with:] Copies and Extracts of Letters from Governor Phillip. London: Printed for J. Debrett, 1791- [1792]. 26 pp. and 127 pp. 4to (285 x 210 mm). Later marbled-paper wrappers. Condition: occasional light spotting to first title, title to second work cut away with loss of a section of the title and the imprint, the excised portion restored with blank paper. Provenance: George Duncan (bookplate on verso of first title). A RARE SAMMELBAND OF 'FOUNDATION OF AUSTRALIA' PAMPHLETS. Both the 'Extracts of Letters' between Governor Phillip and his supporter Lord Sydney, and the second work 'Copies and Extracts' were undoubtedly published in very small numbers and used to pressure the British Government and other parties to support and fund the expansion of the first Colony in Australia. Governor Phillip took the first Fleet to Australia in 1788 and founded the new settlement at Sydney Cove. Phillip wanted to get back to England in 1790, but only returned to London in 1792. It would appear that Lord Sydney used Governor Phillips Reports for the first short work in 1791 and on Phillips return to London in 1792, the longer report argued for the development of the Australian colony. Both comprise invaluable detail of the fledgling colony. Only 3 copies are recorded in ABPC as offered at auction in the last 35 years and it appears only the Stock Collection copy comprised both companion works. Ferguson 116 (first work); Ferguson 144; Wantrup 12 (second work).(1)
