Japanese Woodcut Map.c. 1860s. Japanese woodcut map of Edo (Tokyo), hand colored in outline, (77 7/8 inches [at longest] x 74 inches). The map decorated with pictorial embellishment of the seas with ships, the city with houses and mountains around.. Condition: small occasional wormholes, scattered light spotting and soiling, folds. A fine large map of Tokyo, produced just before the Meiji period, orientated to the west, accurately mapping the expanding city of Tokyo. This detailed map extends to take in the expansion east of the Sumida river, now downtown Tokyo, as well as showing the Shoguns Palace and principal clan houses in the old city to the west of the Sumida. In the late 18th century Edo had over a million inhabitants, and was the laregst city in the world (twice as large as both London and Paris), but entirely closed to western commerce. (1)
