Title in red and black. Illustrated with engraved frontispiece, portrait, double-page map, double-page plan and 17 full page plates. Contemporary calf, spine gilt in compartments, six raised bands, morocco lettering label. Condition: 1 or 2 marginal tears or repairs, some light spotting or discoloration, frontispiece creased and folded; upper cover detached, lower hinge cracked, covers abraded, rubbed and scuffed. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. The work includes much commentary on the manners and customs of the Chinese, together with a second part comprising a general description of the Chinese Empire. The fine plates and illustrations show various views from China, Tibet and Tartary, as well as depictions of costume and natural history. Cordier 2347; Wing N-1152.
