Description
WORLD - Gulielmus NICOLAI (1573-1613) Nova et integra universi orbis descriptio [Lyons]: 1603. 12 engraved gores on two sheets, 6 gore sections to each sheet (each sheet 260 x 255 mm), the gores forming a globe of c. 17cm diameter. Condition: lower right corner of second sheet with small repair. AN IMPORTANT AND RARE SET OF GLOBE GORES. The geography of these gores is curiously old fashioned and clearly modelled on globes by Francois Demongenet c. 1560 and Caspar Vopell of Cologne c. 1536. This Nicolai globe and the globe of 17cm diameter by Johannes Oterschaden, which is almost identical to the Nicolai, are somewhat of a mystery insofar as who copied who and which came first. The Nicolai globe is clearly dated while the Oterschaden is undated but accorded a date of c. 1600 by Dekker Globes at Greenwich GLB0119. Both makers come from 'Belga,' i.e. either the low countries or North Eastern France. Otershaden worked in the South of France while Nicolai is known to have worked in Lyons and then in Avignon in 1626. Very few sets of this globe are known. Shirley World Maps records just one set in University Library Leiden. Shirley 241.(1)
