Description
During the early part of the twentieth century, the Chestnut blight struck American Chestnut trees to devastating effect. The majestic trees that at one time represented significant portions of many of our forests rapidly disappeared. Today, just locating a living Chestnut would be a noteworthy accomplishment; attempting to purchase beautiful Chestnut wood for decorative purposes on the other hand would be virtually impossible. In the 1970's, Warner and Kay LeRoy scoured the continent is search of what hopefully would become magnificent vintage hardwood paneling to adorn the walls of Tavern on the Green. What they discovered might well have been the last of the great stashes of American Chestnut in existence. Beautifully patinated and figured, their discovery was used cover many of the wall surfaces of Tavern. Cut into eight foot lengths for floor to ceiling wall coverings and three foot lengths to reach chair rail height, there is approximately 3,200 square feet of vintage Chestnut paneling on the walls of Tavern today. The buyer of this lot will be purchasing all the Chestnut wall paneling in the Restaurant. Although it has been suggested that this paneling will be "easy to remove", it will be up to the buyer to make that judgment. In any case, removal must be accomplished within three weeks following the auction. Please contact Guernsey's for further details or to arrange an advance viewing of the Chestnut. Approx. 3,200 sq. ft. Reserve.
