Attractive Oval Pastel Portrait of Lt. Col. Stephen Kemble (1740-1827), Deputy Adjutant General of the British Army in North America, 1772-1779, in British military dress, with his powdered hair clubbed, presented in a period oval giltwood frame in the neoclassical taste and glazed, the pastel now on a canvas support, the reverse of the frame with an old handwritten label identifying the subject and his rank, h. 20-1/2", w. 17-1/2". Kemble's journals give one of the best records of the War for Independence as seen through the eyes of the redcoats. After the resignation of his commission in 1779, he served in Jamaica, Nicaragua, Canada, England and the West Indies.
