Description
Rare and unusual, 18K yellow gold, hunting cased, keyless, digital pocket watch with black onyx dial, Swiss, No. 901225, circa 1885.

Aeby & Landry was established in 1873 in Madretsch, near Bienne. At the 1876 U.S. Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, they exhibited watches and pieces arranged to show successive stages of fabrication. They were an important company, making complete watches. Interestingly, Gruen said that Leo Aeby made some of the early Columbus movements between 1875 and 1880. The company registered its name in 1881 as a maker of watch movements and cases. The company received many First Class Certificates from the Bienne Guarantee Office in 1880 and 1881. They won the Second Class Medal at the National Exhibition of Horology in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1881. In 1882 they won a prize at the Swiss National Exhibition in Zurich for the great variety of their work and its practicality from a commercial point of view. At the beginning of the 1880s, Aeby & Landry experimented with digital displays. They made their own system for jump hours and minutes similar to that of Joseph Pallweber, patented in 1883. This watch is based on that design. They also experimented with A. Kaiser’s system, as we have seen in one of their silver jump hour watches. This watch is quite unusual for its black onyx dial as well as the ornate gold case; the company usually made watches in silver cases with enamel or metal dials.
