Description
Egypt, Late Dynastic to Ptolemaic Periods, ca. 664 to 30 BCE. A mold-formed plaster mold of a falcon head, one of the most recognizable symbols of ancient Egypt. The head is characteristically avian - with its short beak, beaky eyes, and furrowed brows - but also exhibits certain anthropomorphic features like well-defined ears, full cheeks, and a slender, tapering neck. Falcon heads are usually meant as depictions of the deities Horus, Ra, or even Qebehsenuef, the falcon-headed son of Horus; however, discerning between them is difficult without accompanying features like bodies or headdresses. This plaster model was made to assist sculptors in properly executing certain stylistic details of larger stone sculptures. Custom wooden display stand included. Size: 3.5" W x 4" H (8.9 cm x 10.2 cm); 6.625" H (16.8 cm) on included custom stand.
