Item Details
Description
walnut tall case clock with yellow pine secondary, scalloped door and "turtle back" applied base panel flanked by quarter columns, arched painted dial with gilt spandrels, signed "George Woltz Hagerstown", Maryland, 1790-1810, 88-3/4 x 23-1/2 x 10-1/2 in. Case with replaced feet, otherwise excellent condition with old refinishing, minor break to one cornice molding, dial paint with some strengthening, surface abrasions and other possible restoration, saddle board probably a good match (one case upright with replaced shim). Provenance: Old typed label on back "To Mrs. J.W. Jones, Martinsville, Virginia"; Private Collection, Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The MESDA Index of Southern Craftsmen records George Woltz, Sr. (1782-1808) and George Woltz, Jr. (circa 1808), both clock and watch makers working in Hagerstown, Maryland. George Woltz, Sr., is also recorded as a cabinetmaker and may have made the case for this clock.
