The document reads: "Recd Williamsburg Oct. 2d 1781 from Jno Carter Esq. for Messrs Wadsworth & Carter One Thousand hard dollars to acct for J. Whiting" During the course of the Revolutionary War Jeremiah Wadsworth and John Carter profited greatly as suppliers to both the American and French forces. Wadsworth, an established merchant prior to the outbreak of hostilities, proved more efficient than most commisaries in procuring much needed supplies during the war and was, at the insistance of George Washington, granted the rank of commisary general of purchases in 1778. His ability in this post soon attracted the attention of General Rochambeau, who, two years later, requested that Wadsworth join with Carter in a firm to supply the French forces involved in the conflict.
