Description
Large hand potted and handmade Chinese vase with incised five-claw dragons painted in colorful over-glaze enamels.
Lipped mouth on the top of the vase curves down to a rounded shoulder that tapers to a flared foot. The vase material is a chocolate colored clay with over-glaze enamels in blues, green, and white. The design is of two fantastic coiled dragons equidistant from each other with lappets at the base, scrolling and lappets at the shoulder and a band at the mouth. The dragons have molded scales, horns, whiskers, and five-clawed feet. There are incised scrolling clouds and fret designs around the dragons. The designs on the rest of the vase are molded and then painted with enamel. The base foot ring is unglazed but the base has a pale enamel with a black mark in a cartouche. The clay has a rough feel while the enamel is smooth. You can see the potter’s rings on the inside of the neck.
There is a stamped mark on the base that I can't decipher.
MEASUREMENTS 14 1/2" Tall x 8 1/4" diameter. Weighs 3 lb 7.6 oz (1.58 kg)
CONDITION There are no breaks, cracks or chips, although it appears that there was a chip on the base ring that was repaired. This might have been a manufacturing flaw since it appears as though the repair was made before the vase was glazed. It is along the base on very difficult to notice unless you inspect the base ring very closely (see photo)
I love the five-clawed dragons on this YiXing vase. Accurately painted and potted. Quite striking.
