Description
The charming plate is painted with a scene of a pair of mandarin ducks, a sign of filial purity, swimming on currents of water in a stream bed. Insects are flying overhead and water plants are blooming by the stream. The scene is painted in rust-red, blue green, black and gilding. Above and below the main scene are medallions and brocade designs in rust-red and gold gilding, as well as a blue green brocade design. The plate measures 8 ¾" diameter.
The back of the plate has four reoccurring Buddhist symbols, including a scroll and fish eyes (We're unable to identify the other two symbols). Two underglaze blue circles border the plate's rim. On the bottom are four Kanju characters Fuki Choshun Fuki Choshun meaning Wealth, Nobility, Longevity and Youth, (also translated as 'Good fortune and long life').
MEASUREMENTS The plate was produced in Arita Province, during Meiji (1868-1912) period. There is a slight chance that it's a bit older.
CONDITION The condition is near perfect with no chips or cracks. The porcelain rings like a bell. There is only slight wear to the gilding in the streams and currents.
A fine, well painted piece of Imari with an unusual and beautiful design. The waterfowl and flying insects give this dish definite eye appeal.
