Description
An old mah-jongg set that was made in China for the American market in the ‘20s. There was a lot of hand work performed in making this set. It has a very vintage look.
A wooden rectangular box with five drawers that each hold a tray. The box wood is hard with a shiny stained surface that feels smooth and looks shiny. The drawers and shelves are made from a white soft wood. The fronts of these boxes are stained dark. There is a wood face that pulls up to access the drawers. The box has a nice brass handle on the top and each tray has a brass knob. The drawers store the tiles and markers. The tiles are made from bamboo with bone faces.
Wood trays made from a light wood and then stained dark except for one red tray. They have paper backs with the words Ma’ Jong Doubling Scale. The set contains • 36 dot tiles • 36 bamboo tiles. • 36 character tiles. • 12 red, green and white tiles with an extra four white tiles. • 16 east, south, west and north tiles. • 4 flower tiles and 4 season tiles • A tiny box that holds 3 tiny dice. • 4 marker tiles with the 4 directions. • A small black round container that holds 2 round black pieces, 39 one dot red, 11 five dot red, 54 two dot black, and 29 ten dot black markers. • 4 wood trays • An old Parker Brothers mah- jongg instruction game book that goes with the set.
MEASUREMENTS Set measures: 8 5/8†(21.9 cm) wide x 6 7/8†(17.5 cm) tall x 6 ¾†(17.1 cm) deep Trays measure 16†(40.6 cm) long x 1 5/8†(4.1 cm) deep x 1 ¼†(3.2 cm) tall Total weight 8 lb 7.4 oz (3.74 kg)
CONDITION There is wear to the box especially on the base, which has been moved along tables and shelves. The trays show old wear. Someone has written in English the letters n, s, e, and w on the 4 marker discs. There are only 3 tiny dice. I think the set is pretty intact. The tiles look in good shape.
A great old set to be admired and definitely used.
