Item Details
Description
Buddy Holly Cessna 172 N8556B Plane and Signed Flight School Log Book. Since 1957, it has been widespread knowledge that Buddy Holly was interested in flying, and in fact, had taken flying lessons. Little information was available to researchers or fans until now. Larry Holley, his brother, owned a plane and was often accompanied by Buddy on leisurely flights with him. In order to be able to pilot the plane himself, Buddy would need a license, so he began taking flying lessons at Champs Aviation in Lubbock, Texas. Through the decades, the only factual evidence found was a record of payment to Champs for nine dollars for one lesson on November 5, 1958. (Plane Wing # N9274B ) (Recorded in the log book being sold with this plane). Until the discovery of the log book offered here, this flight lesson was believed to be the only one that Buddy Holly had ever taken. Larry Holley discovered the book among Buddy Holly's belongings. He sold it directly to the present owner and validates this sale on a YouTube video. Though the present owner initially wanted the log book for the documentation of the Holly flight lessons and for the Buddy Holly signature within, he soon became curious about the planes he had flown. This curiosity brought him to the discovery via the FAA that the N9274B plane no longer existed. But, the Cessna 172 N8556B plane was registered to a Mr. Larry R. Stewart. The owner of the log book was able to track down Mr. Stewart who was unaware of the Buddy Holly connection to the plane . Together they have partnered to bring this unique combination of plane and flight log book to this auction. The plane is flown regularly and is in excellent service condition. It is the wish of both owners that the plane and the log book remain together to preserve the historical significance of this monumental find. Considerable additional information regarding this lot is available for provenance and documentation Please contact the gallery. *Buddy Holly removed the e from the family name when assuming his stage name.
