Description
A Rare 1865 Lincoln Assassination Broadside 19.25''x12''. One of 50 or so known to exist, this is the wanted poster for John Wilkes Booth and his accomplices for the assassination of our 16th president Abraham Lincoln issued on April 20th, 1865. This is a seemingly unknown version issued for the State of Maryland, the state where Booth ran to after the assassination. Possibly the only one of this version known in existence. Booth was captured on April 26th, six days after this poster was issued. It reads, ''STATE OF MARYLAND EXECUTIVE DEPARTMENT, Annapolis, April 20, 1865. The following COMMUNICATION from the SECRETARY OF WAR has just been received by Telegraph, and is published for general information; every State and County Officer is requested to circulate this notice, and they, as well as all our Citizens, are earnestly invoked to aid, by their most diligent exertions, in bringing to justice the MURDERERS OF OUR LATE LAMENTED CHIEF MAGISTRATE- a duty the more imperative upon us all, when we call to mind the mortifying reflection, that the MISCREANT who fired the shot was a native of our State. A.W. BRADFORD. War Department, Washington, April 20, 1865. $100,000 REWARD. The Murderer of our late Beloved President, ABRAHAM LINCOLN, is still at large. $50,000 Reward will be paid by this Department for his apprehension, in addition to any Reward offered by Municipal Authorities or State Executives. $25,000 Reward will be paid for the apprehension of G.A. Atzerot, sometimes called 'Port Tobacco,' one of BOOTH'S accomplices. $25,000 Reward will be paid for the apprehension of DAVID C. HAROLD, another of BOOTH'S accomplices. Liberal Rewards with be paid for any information that shall conduce to the Arrest of either of the above named Criminals, or their accomplices. All persons Harboring or Secreting the said Persons, or either of them, or aiding or assisting their Concealment or Escape, will be treated as Accomplices in the Murder of the PRESIDENT, and the attempted Assassination of the SECRETARY OF STATE and shall be subject to Trial by a Military Commission, and the punishment of Death. Let the stain of Innocent Blood be removed from the Land by the Arrest and Punishment of the Murderers. All good Citizens are exhorted to aid Public Justice on this occasion. Every man should consider his own conscious charged with the solemn duty, and rest neither night or day until it be accomplished. EDWIN M. STANTON, SECRETARY OF WAR.'' This broadside was given to William M. McMahan Sheriff of Caroline County, Maryland (Sometime between 1862-1869). The poster is inscribed in ink on verso corner, ''To Shff McMahan''. McMahan was also appointed postmaster of Fowling Creek, Caroline County in 1862 and postmaster of New Hope, Caroline County in 1869 with original certificates included. Lot also includes three Sheriff Sale broadsides for August 15th 1864, September 17th 1864, and June 27th 1865 listing Wm. M. McMahan as sheriff, sizes 12''x13 and 18''x14.5''. They were printed by the ''Union'' print depot in Maryland. This group of rare American history has traveled through time by descent of Sheriff William McMahan.
