Description
Campaign newspaper, “Young Hickory,” Boston, September 14, 1844, tabloid, 4pp., never bound, some loss of paper mostly right marging but includes a 1/2 dozen words, else VG. Polk was often referred to as Young Hickory due to his mentor Andrew Jackson. Democratic Party candidate Polk ran against Whig party candidate Henry Clay. the primary issue that year was the annexation of Texas as a slave state. polk was in favor, Clay was opposed. That issue is discussed in detail in this issue. But most impressive is the front page illustration of a disemboweled coon representing the Whig party. The caption reads “Thus far into the bowels of that coon old Maine has marched.” The cartoon shows several losing whig issues. The Polk / Davis campaign flag cut waves on page 2. Scarce campaign newspaper in any condition.
