Rare and very important work relating the earliest investigation and settlement of New England. Streeter, Part II, lot 611 ("The Briefe Relation, brought out by the Council for New England, describes the basic form of government by which New England was settled and gives a short account of New England history from 1607 to 1622. Most of the grants later made of the territory in New England were by means of the Council. [Justin] Winsor was inclined to attribute this book to Sir Ferdinando Gorges, “Father of English Colonization in America" and the prime mover of the Council of New England."); Church 394 (''It is one of the earliest and most important of the early books relating to the discovery and colonization in Massachusetts''); STC 18483; ESTC S110082; Jones 89; Sabin 52619. This copy sold as a duplicate from the British Library in 1787 (stamp on title page verso) and later from the library of the eminent collector Charles Deane, sold as lot number 2573 in the auction of his library by C.F. Libbie in 1898. Deane's ownership signature on front blank. This copy appeared again at Sotheby's in 1981. Only two other copies appear in auction records, the Streeter copy, selling for $5,000 in 1967 and $125,000 when it crossed the block again in 2016, the Borlase-Caren copy (with some restorations) fetched $55,200 in 2012. Lacks initial and final blank (A1 & E4); leaves C2 through D4 are supplied in neat manuscript facsimile; leaves A3 &A4 with repairs in inner margin.
