Description
VERMONT, 1864-1956 An ink, pencil, and watercolor painting by George Timothy Tobin for the January, 1907 issue of Harper's Bazar. Harper's Bazar was an upscale women's magazine focused on beauty and fashion. Tobin is one of many great artists including Romain de Tirtoff "Erte" (1892-1990) and Louis Rhead (1857-1926) to have designed covers for the magazine. The cover is decorated with the profile of a Greek goddess in diaphanous drapery holding a large gilt skeleton key with figural bow of a seated man emptying an Etruscan vessel. The work is signed in the lower right corner of the image "George T. Tobin" and stamped "COPYRIGHT 1906 BY HARPER & BROTHERS" below the painted margin. One of six works in the sale from the Artist's private collection given directly to his great grand niece. Water color measures 12" by 9", overall 16" by 13 1/8"
