Description
A pair of circa 1967 .930 silver (better than sterling) salt and pepper shakers by Antonio Pineda of Taxco, Mexico. Incredible pair of shakers, of heavy gauge silver, in the form of dice. Dimensions: 1 7/8" square. Weight shy of 9 oz. Marked as illustrated. In excellent condition. Pineda is known for his bold modernist designs and superb execution. (Some of Pineda's work, 1962-1963, were marked using the Los Castillo mark, because a cooperative was formed to allow Pineda and Los Castillo union members to produce jewelry that would be sold through Los Castillo.) There was a recent Antonio Pineda exhibition 'Silver Seduction -The Art of Mexican Modernist ANTONIO PINEDA (b. 1991-d. 2009) at the Fowler Museum at UCLA Los Angeles (August 24, 2008 – March 15, 2009). The Fowler Museum exhibition was a large -- more than 200 examples -- and illuminating survey of remarkable jewelry designs. Known for his bold designs and ingenious use of gemstones, Pineda’s extraordinary talent and creative vision are evident in his sensual jewelry and outstanding hollowware and tableware. The Fowler Museum exhibition traced the evolution of Pineda’s work from the 1930s to the 1970s and highlights his important contributions to Mexican modernism as well as to the creation of a Mexican artistic national identity.
