1840 Civil War Heavy Calvary Sabre Model 1840 style saber, called the "wrist breaker", was a relatively heavy cavalry saber. It saw extensive use by both sides during the war. Standard features include arelatively straight wooden handle , brass hilt has three branches, steel blade has flat back with narrow fuller stopped about 8" from the ricasso and wide fuller stopped at the ricasso. Has three small chips on thesharp edge, possibly from battle use. The wood handle is missing the leather. Blade has rusting and pitting. There are no visible maker or importer marks.The blade is 36-1/8" long and the overall sword length is 42". Sword weight is about 2 pounds, 10 ounces.
