Dictionnaire Bouillet is the informal title of the Dictionnaire universel D'histoire et de Géographie and Des Sciences des Lettres et Arts (universal history and science dictionaries). The first editions were published in 1842; the 34th and final edition was published in 1914. The original authors were Marie-Nicolas Bouillet and Alexis Chassang. Editions after 1852 were amended, probably clandestinely and by the typographers rather than the authors, to make certain articles less offensive to Christian sensibilities and references to sales of religious indulgences were deleted entirely.

These impressive copies measure 10"x7" and are approximatley 4" thick. An impressive pair for for the serious collector.

Condition - Canvas and leather half binding. Raised bands and gilt. Marbled end papers. Foxing throughout. Bumps and scuffs to boards and back strips.
