Description
A pair of North Italian Piedmontese cream painted and parcel gilt stools , circa 1790, one with contemporary cover worked with a classical figure, with gilt paterae and laurel carved seat rails on tapered turned legs with gadrooned caps and acanthus collars on ball feet, 48cm high, 46cm square The present pair of stools possibly form part of a suite including a set nine Italian painted and parcel gilt chairs comprising seven side chairs and a pair of armchairs, in the Collection of The National Trust at Attingham Park, Shropshire (NT 608168.1.1-7 and NT608168.2.1-2). The Attingham chairs have provenance from William Noel-Hill, 3rd Baron Berwick (1773-1842) who probably acquired them in Italy during his appointment as British envoy and ambassador to the Kingdom of Naples and the Two Sicilies. The chairs passed by descent until they were bequeathed to the National Trust together with the house and contents by Thomas Henry Noel-Hill, 8th Baron Berwick (1877-1947), on 15th May 1953.Please note: The footnote on this lot should read: The present pair of stools apparently match the design of a set of nine Italian painted and parcel-gilt chairs including a pair of armchairs, in the collection of the National Trust at Attingham Park, Shropshire (NT608168.1.1-7 and NT7608168.2.1.-2).
