Pliocene Period, 5.2 - 2.5 million years BP. A mastodon fossil tusk carving from the Island of Java. 28 grams, 56mm (2 1/4"). From an old Bristol, UK, collection; acquired 1950s-1960s. Mastodons are species of extinct mammoth, distantly related to elephants, that lived during the late Miocene or late Pliocene Period up to their extinction at the end of the Pleistocene 10000 to 11000 years ago.
