Description
HARRIS ARTHUR T.: (1892-1984) British Marshal of the Royal Air Force, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of RAF Bomber Command during World War II. T.L.S., Arthur T Harris MRAF, two pages, 8vo, Goring on Thames, 18th May 1979, to ‘My dear Powell’. Harris thanks his correspondent for their letter and explains 'I am sorry that I am unable now-a-days to answer affirmatively the endless requests I get to write Prologues or comments on other people's books. If I answered them all I would have time to do nothing else, and in any case, at my age, that sort of thing is getting beyond me' although further remarking ‘If you would like to send me a copy of the MSS I would be prepared, if necessary, to make a few comments, and I would certainly be interested in reading it’, also adding 'I think you will find the Air Historical Branch at the Ministry of Defence could provide you with a certain amount of information should you need it'. Harris further writes 'I personally never visited Lichfield, or indeed most of the other Stations in my Command, for the simple reason that it was not possible to spend the whole of every day, three hundred and sixty five days in the year, laying on a major battle for the night, or for the next day, and, at the same time, to spend time travelling round the countryside, and I have never found it possible to be in two places at once although a lot of Historians always seem to indicate that I should have been!!' A letter of interesting content for its references to the Wartime activities of Harris. VG
