North America, Pliocene to Pleistocene, 100,000 to 20,000 years old. A beautiful marbled brown and creamy white/grey, fully fossilized tip of a mammoth tusk, cleanly cut and highly polished. The base shows the growth rings in cross-section, with each ring visible representing a single year in the mammoth's life (thick rings mean that the mammoth had a good diet that year, with little hunger). Size: 2.3" L x 2.9" W x 7.2" H (5.8 cm x 7.4 cm x 18.3 cm)

A tusk of this size comes from deep within the Pleistocene period, when the northern hemisphere was dominated by massive ice sheets drained by enormous glacial rivers and lakes. Imagine encountering this animal on an Ice Age steppe, towering up to 13 feet at the shoulder and weighing up to 12 tons, with the tusk - of which this is just a small component - and its partner rising in an upward curve from their jaw. These tusks could be up to six feet long! Imagine the strength the animal's neck must have had just to hold up their massive weight.
