Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Guanacaste, Nicoya Region, ca. 200 to 600 CE. A mold-made polychrome trophy head representing the "trophy" that was removed from the losing party in hand-to-hand combat, its elaborately decorated visage and scalloped headdress displaying the impressive aesthetic of the Guanacaste-Nicoya artisans, with intricate geometric patterns in red and black on a cream hued ground. Truly, the entire surface is ornately decorated. The piece is perforated at each end for suspension. A chilling reminder of the fate that unfortunate losing combatants faced in ancient Costa Rica.
