Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, San Juanito, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A standing male figure playing a wind instrument, nude (with navel showing) except for an elaborate headdress with a crossed-headband , long feather-like earrings, applied shoulder pellets, double armbands, and a loincloth, all painted with red-brown slip against a cream ground. Figures of this type with an elongated somewhat tubular head and slit eyes have been attributed to cemeteries in the region of San Juanito, municipio of Antonio Escobedo, approximately fifty miles west of Guadalajara (Jose Parres Arias, "Nuevas adquisiciones del Museo de Arqueologia." Eco 12, 1962.) Size: 5.75" W x 12.25" H (14.6 cm x 31.1 cm)
