Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 19th century. A fine polychrome painted Thangka depicting a yellow wealth god known as Jambhala sitting on a snow lion and holding a mongoose in his left hand. A mountain landscape scene surrounds him with a dancing figure holding a platter of fruits at bottom center of the painting. A beautiful floral cotton fabric surrounds with piece, with a veil featuring a repeated stylized yin-yang motif. Jambhala (also known as Dzambhala, Dzambala, or Jambala) is thought to be an emanation of Avalokitesvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. Five different wealth Jambhal exist, each possessing his own mantra and practice to end poverty and promote wealth. The yellow Jambhala is regarded as the most popular and powerful Wealth God, believed to be an emanation of Vaisravana, one of the "Four Great World-Protecting Heavenly Kings," the guardian of light, and a very charitable deity.
