Item Details
Description
India, Dutch East India Company in southwestern India, minted at Cochin, ca. 1663 to 1776 CE. A pair of tiny gold fanam coins minted by Dutch traders in India. One side portrays a "Lazy J" with dots below it, thought to be a highly abstract boar design; the obverse shows another stylized figure, possibly the goddess Kali. Size of each: 0.3" W (0.8 cm)

The Dutch traded in India from 1596, and, in 1602, combined all of their companies into one, the famous VOC (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie, United East India Company). This company gained a monopoly for trade with India and in the 17th and early 18th centuries dominated the highly lucrative European trade with India. At the height of their influence, they produced coinage modeled on local Indian currency and operated mints at Cochin, Masulipattam, Nagapatam (or Negapatam), Pondicherry, and Pulicat.
