Description
Near East, Persia, probably made in Iran, Gurgan, ca. 11th century CE. A stunning earthenware bowl with bichrome yellow and brown slip decoration depicting a prancing horned ibex in profile surrounded by dotted and leaf-like motifs, all under a transparent glaze. The ibex was a favored iconographic subject of the Persians. Scenes of ibexes in the wilderness were oftentimes representative of hunting, an activity enjoyed by the elite. Size: 7.875" W x 2.375" H (20 cm x 6 cm)
