Roman Republic, Q. Pomponius Musa, ca. 56 BCE. AR denarius (3.54 g) Obverse: Laureate head of Apollo right; behind, star. Reverse: Q POMPONI MVSA, Urania, the Muse of Astronomy, standing left, with wand pointing to globe set on tripod. Crawford 410/8. Size: 0.75" W (1.9 cm)
Quintus Pomponius Musa was a banker and minter from the Pomponia family who created ten different coin designs using the Muses (as a play on his name) and Hercules. All of the coins had Apollo on one side, who in the Greek pantheon presided over the Muses.
