Item Details
Description
Roman Empire, Tunisia, N. Africa, ca. 4th to 5th century CE. A wonderful find, this gypsum mold was used to create terracotta oil lamps. Note the lovely negative impressions of a decorative abstract motif for the recessed tondo and repeated tightly wound spirals for the surrounding circular border. This mold was probably responsible for the creation of dozens and dozens of mold-made lamps from Roman North Africa comprised of a sunken discus, a lug handle, and a wide channel running down the nozzle. Size: 7.125" L x 4.75" W x 2.125" H (18.1 cm x 12.1 cm x 5.4 cm)
