Item Details
Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A cast silver phalera in the form of a snarling lion looking back over its shoulder. The body of the lion is wonderfully detailed, with stylized fur, mane, and claws. The mouth is open with visible teeth. A beautiful turquoise patina covers the back of the head and neck of the lion, suggesting it spent time buried with a bronze item. A round tab projects from the back of the phalera. A phalera is a sculpted button awarded to and worn by Roman soldiers on their breastplates. Size: 2.2" W x 1.4" H (5.6 cm x 3.6 cm); (20.6 g)
