Roman Redware Pottery Plate - Sabine
Item Details
Description
Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st century CE. A mold-made redware ceramic plate, of the type known as terra sigillata. These objects were made to have a highly reflective surface. This particular example has a maker's mark in tondo that reads "SABINE". Sabine, sometimes called the Sabinum or Sabina Tiberina, was a part of Italy conquered by Rome in 290 BCE and whose people were, by the time this was made, full Roman citizens. Terra sigillata, literally "sealed earth", refers to the method used to seal the red slip onto the pottery during the kilning process. Pottery of this style was traded far and wide; archaeologists have found it from North Africa to Roman Britain. Size: 7.9" W x 1.45" H (20.1 cm x 3.7 cm)

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection acquired before 2000
