Item Details
Description
Greece, Hellenistic period or later, ca. 3rd century BCE to 1st century CE. A creamy-colored marble tile with hints of grey and beige, polished flat on one face and inscribed with Greek letters. These letters are part of a larger inscription, probably marking a tomb or maybe a public memorial. The top and bottom lines on this tile are fragmentary, but the middle line translates to "Thekla". Thekla (romanized to Thecla) means "God's fame" and was a common feminine name in ancient Greece, made famous by Saint Thekla, a follower of Saint Paul the Apostle in early 1st century CE Lycaonia (Turkey). Size: 4.7" W x 4.75" H (11.9 cm x 12.1 cm)
