Description
Classical world, southern Italy, Apulia, Messapian tribe, ca. 5th to 3rd century BCE. A ceramic plate with simple black and dark red motifs on the interior over a pale beige buff background. This example is in excellent condition for its age. Most of the decoration is comprised of repeated bands of color around the rim where the flat surface of the plate meets its concave edge. In tondo is a delicate loop of vine, probably a reference to grape vines and wine. The plate stands on a low, round, buff foot. This type of plate was probably made to hold offerings in a grave. Size: 6.3" W x 1.05" H (16 cm x 2.7 cm)
