Stunning Romano Egyptian Blue Glazed Faience Dish
Item Details
Description
Egypt, Romano-Egyptian period, ca. 30 BCE to 2nd century CE. What an amazing deep blue color - despite our photographer's expert skills, no photographs can entirely capture how brilliant the color of this dish is. Diamond-shaped, with scalloped edges and an ovoid bowl, this dish may have been used for holding salt or some other condiment at the table. Faience and other colored glasses were made in part to replicate the brilliant colors of stones and gems, and lapis lazuli, which had to be mined from Afghanistan, was one of the most sought after stones to replicate. The artisan here has done an amazing job of using copper sulfate blended with the quartz paste of the faience to create this color. Size: 3.1" L x 2.1" W x 0.75" H (7.9 cm x 5.3 cm x 1.9 cm)
