REJLANDER, Oscar G. Edgar Yoxall Jones, Father of Art Photography: O. G. Rejlander, 1813-1875, Newton Abbot, England: David and Charles, 1973. Hardcover (gold-stamped blue paper over boards), 9 Â¾ x 7 Â½ inches, 112 pages, halftone illustrations, dustjacket.
This biographical monograph appropriately opens with the frontispiece as Rejlander's notorious 1857 image, â€œThe Two Ways of Life,â€ shown in two versions and analyzed in great detail. Jones goes on to discuss the photographer's other, less-known workâ€”tableaux, genre, allegories, and â€œstudies of the ideal.â€ Among them are illustrations for Charles Darwin's 1872 book, On the Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals, some of which Rejlander posed for himself. Rejlander (1813 -1875) was one of the first Victorian photographers to self-consciously attempt to make high art with the camera. Very good condition.
