Description
The lot features a beautifully polychrome painted authentic circa 1870 Southern Plains War Shield attributed to the Comanche. The piece shows a brain tanned Buffalo stretched hide construction wetted over a bent tree branch. The shield measures 18 inches in diameter and shows excellent well preserved condition. The piece has early painted symbols all done in polychrome pigment paints, representing the Earth, Moon, wind, and sky. The exceptionally rare piece shows minor wear from age and use with minor rippling of the hide. The piece is from the Ex-collections of Sherwoods Spirit of America Sante Fe and Mark Francis Collection. Truly one of the finest war shields we have brought to market.
