ENGLISH COPELAND SPODE HERRING HUNTING SCENE CERAMIC PARTIAL DINNER SERVICE, LOT OF 53, comprising fourteen 6 3/8" D plates, eight 6 1/2" D bowls, thirteen 7 5/8" D plates, twelve 10 1/2" D plates, one 9 1/2" x 9 1/2" serving dish, one 14 1/2" x 10 7/8" platter, one 8 1/2" x 6" vegetable dish, one 6" H jug/pitcher, one divided and covered serving dish, and one 3 1/8" H candlestick; all plates having green rims, assorted polychrome designs of hunting scenes including "Throwing Off", "The Find", and "Gone Away". Marked on base with "Copeland / Spode / England", rider's hat and crop, and some lightly impressed for Copeland Spode. Together with two cup and saucer sets having unidentified mark on base with green-rimmed saucers and horse riders painted on sides. 57 pieces total. Copeland Spode, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire, England. 1920-1957.
50 pieces undamaged, two 6 1/2" and one 6 3/8" plates with flakes on rims.
Literature: Mark as in Wilkinson - Spode-Copeland-Spode, p. 281 (1920-1957).
Provenance: From the collection of the late Dorothy Claypool, Alexandria, VA.
Catalogue Note: Within the rider's hat printed on the back of each piece reads "FROM THE / ORIGINAL DRAWINGS / BY / J.F. HERRING SEN. / IN THE POSSESSION / OF THE / COPELAND FAMILY / RIBBLESTONE HALL / STONE / STAFFS.". John Frederick Herring, Sr. (1795 - 1865) was sponsored by W. T. Copeland in the 1830s to do drawings of horses for designs to go on pottery.
