JACOBUS HOUBRAKEN (DUTCH, 1698-1780) PORTRAIT OF GEORGE FREDERIC HANDEL, engraving on laid paper, from "The Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain, Engraved by Mr. Houbraken and Mr. Vertue, With Their Lives and Characters" by Thomas Birch, printed by John and Paul Knapton in London, 1742-1756. Matted and housed under glass in a modern frame. Together with a George Martin Preisler (German, 1700-1754) engraved portrait of "JOHANNES GASTO I" and a Pierre Lombart (French, 1612-1681) engraved illustration from "The Works of Publius Virgilius Maro" by John Ogilby (British, 1600-1676), printed in 1654, both matted and housed under glass in a modern frame. Three pieces total. 17th and 18th century. Portrait of Handel 9" x 14 1/2" sight, 23 1/4" x 17 1/2" OA.
Prints in good visual condition with minor toning and foxing/discoloration, Preisler example with 2 1/2" diagonal tear upper right corner. Frames with minor wear. Not examined out of frames.
Provenance: Property from the collection of Dr. Jefferson Davis Futch III, Professor of History at Washington & Lee University, Lexington, VA.
