HERB LEE AP LITHOGRAPH SARASOTA CIRCUS CLOWNS: Herbert ‘Herb’ Lee: (1915 – 2010, America), lithograph on paper depicting circus clowns in their dressing room. Lee settled in Sarasota, Florida home of The Ringling Brothers Circus Museum and 100 years of circus history. We speculate that this piece was created with inspiration from the historic city. BIOGRAPHY: Herbert ‘Herb’ Lee: (1915 – 2010, America) Lee studied at Yale School of Art and the Art Students League of New York. A member of the C.C.C. and W.P.A., Herb worked on many post office murals throughout Pennsylvania. He was a WWII veteran and wounded in Iwo Jima. He worked in numerous mediums oils, water colors, sculpture and reproduction of antique canons and sold many pieces to former 20th century presidents of the United States, including: Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, Dwight D. Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy. Lee owned the York Art Center in York, Pa. who exhibited A.A. Bosshart, pulp artist and commercial illustrator John R. Flanagan (1895-1964, America) and illustrator Clara Elsene Peck (1883 - 1968). Lee eventually moved to Sarasota, Florida where he was befriended by numerous artists, illustrators and collectors.
