Item Details
Description
Pedro Coronel (Mexican, 1923-1985). "Abstraction 'B'". Watercolor on paper. 1984. Signed on the verso (as was his custom), once in upper right "Pedro Coronel. Mex 84" and once in lower right "Pedro Coronel.". Watermarked Arches paper. Painted to the edges, the full sheet, deckle edges. Vibrant, fresh colors. Provenance: Private collection, Key Biscayne, Florida; ex-estate/collection Dr. Augusto Lodi, former gallery director of the Mexican Consulate in Los Angeles, California. Dr. Lodi loaned many works from his private collection for such exhibits as the “Three Generations of Mexican Masters” show held at the Mexican Cultural Institute, Washington, D.C., in 1999. Our example was included in the “Mexican Exhibit” show held at the City of Los Angeles’ Lankershim Arts Center, Los Angeles, California, June 15 – July 13, 1990, and is accompanied by its exhibition label. Accompanied by a letter from Rejane Coronel Lalonde, the recognized authority on Coronel's oeuvre, authenticating this work. Painter, sculptor, and printmaker, Pedro Coronel was born in Zacatecas, Mexico, in 1923. He studied painting and sculpture in La Esmeralda National School of Painting and Sculpture from 1940 to 1945 under Juan Cruz, Francisco Zuniga and Santos Balmori, and was later a teacher there himself. In 1946, Coronel went to Paris, where he attended workshops directed by the painter Victor Brauner and the sculptor Constantin Brancusi. From then on he lived alternately in Mexico and Paris. His first individual exhibition was at the Galeria Proteo in 1954. Later he exhibited in France, Italy, Japan, the United States and Brazil. Dramatization of the colors of the ancient cultures and the recovery of their shapes and motifs are basic features of Coronel’s work. Image size: 30 1/16 x 22 9/16 in. (764 x 573 mm).
