Inca Child's Striped Textile Tunic
Inca Child's Striped Textile Tunic
Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Peru, Inca, ca. 1500 CE. A child's tunic, woven in camelid and native cotton fibers by an Inca artisan. The design features vertical stripes in alternating chocolate brown and tawny ochre - an attractive contrast that the Inca favored. Finely woven. Custom stand on ovoid base. Size: 10.75" L x 24.25" W (27.3 cm x 61.6 cm); 16.625" H (42.2 cm) on stand

Weaving was among the Incas' greatest arts. They used cotton as well as soft wool of the alpaca and the vicuna, the smallest camelid of the Americas. The preservation of Andean textiles is a product of both the dry desert climate of the area and traditional burial practices whereby bodies of the deceased were wrapped in several layers of cloth to make mummy bundles.

Provenance: Ex-private Alan Davis collection, Santa Fe, NM - Acquired at Oconomos Gallery, Santa Fe
