Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Peru (North Coast), Moche Culture, ca. 100 to 700 CE. A nice, large, mold-made pottery vessel of a prone jaguar with ears perked upwards, large eyes, and his paws thrust out in front of him - a pose familiar to anyone who has ever observed any kind of cat at rest! A stirrup spout rises from his back, terminating in a high, conical spout. Size: 10" W x 9.5" H (25.4 cm x 24.1 cm)

The jaguar was a symbol of power and kingship throughout the pre-Columbian New World; for the Moche and others, it symbolized a fierceness as well as an individuality that they identified with leaders in their society. This item was made to be placed into a tomb.

Provenance: Ex-Baker Collection, New Mexico
