Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Jamacoaque, ca. 100 to 500 CE. An extremely expressive pottery mask in the form of a snarling jaguar with almond-shaped eyes presenting bulging round pupils and an open mouth exposing long fangs. His nose is adorned with an ornament, perhaps suggesting that this mask represents a transitioning jaguar shaman figure. Remains of original blue/green pigment grace areas of the surface. Custom stand. Size: 5.375" W x 4.375" H (13.7 cm x 11.1 cm); 5.5" H (14 cm) on stand.

Jaguar imagery symbolized power and might throughout the Pre-Columbian world. Warriors, rulers, hunters, and shamans alike associated themselves with this king of beasts, the largest and most powerful feline in the New World.

Provenance: Ex-private Arizona, USA collection
