Pre-Columbian, Mayan territories in southeastern Mexico, Guerrero, Chontal, ca. 800 to 500 BCE. An exceedingly rare greenstone pectoral pendant in the form of a flying eagle with outspread wings and pierced eyes and/or suspension holes. Two perforations through head for suspension as well. The concave form could only have been created by an artisan who had immense command over his/her technique. The eagle as a bird of prey with soaring flight patterns was regarded as a metaphor for the sun throughout the Pre-Columbian world. Its speed, keen vision, and strong talons also made it an ideal emblem elite hunters and warriors. Beyond this piece's impressive artistry and iconography is the inherent beauty of the stone with gorgeous dark green, white, and russet inclusions.
