Item Details
Description
Roman Empire, ca. 1st to 3rd centuries CE. Ancient very light green glass pitcher / jug with near spherical body, tubular neck, a wide flared mouth with folded lip, and a thick, sinuous trail handle, all on a dimpled bottom with a faint pontil scar. After the invention of blown glass in the first century CE, glass became easy to mass produce, and glass items entered everyday Roman life for the majority of householders. A small vessel like this one may have been used for pouring olive oil. A lovely vessel with wonderful rainbow iridescence. Size: 3.5" in diameter x 4.875" H (8.9 cm x 12.4 cm)

Provenance: private New Jersey USA collection, acquired over twenty years ago
