Item Details
Description
Northern Italy, ca. 5th century BCE. Ancient Etruscan Stamnos or Lebes Gamikos – a rare Etruscan copy of Corinthian Pottery (Italo Geometric). This example is a spherical jar with short thick neck and small side handles. The word “stamnos” is still in use in modern Greek. It was used for holding wine, oil, figs, or salted food. Aristophanes used a line about a “stamnos of Chian wine arriving.” Usually stamnos had a cover of clay either coated with a plain black varnish or decorated. This classic vessel is decorated with bands and patterns. Size: 6.25" W x 5" H (15.9 cm x 12.7 cm)

Provenance: ex-old American collection, thence to Harmer-Rook Galleries
